The scent of litsea cubeba oil – also known by its Chinese name ‘may chang’ – is a very close match to verbena, although there’s no botanical link.
This sweet but strongly scented oil, with its distinctly citrusy edge, is produced by steam distillation from the small, aromatic, pepper-like fruits of the mountain spice tree, native to China and south-east Asia.
