Homemade Christmas Candle Recipe

Make a festive scented candle for your home or to give as a gift

When the nights are chilly, the Christmas lights have gone up and the festive season is well and truly on its way, there’s nothing better than coming home after a long, hard day and curling up in your cosy lair.

December is a busy time of year. All those Christmas parties can start to wear you out more than just a little. When you do manage to carve out an evening to yourself, you’ve got to grab it with both hands and make sure you recharge your batteries to their fullest.

For the perfect night in, you need the right supplies ready and waiting. You’ve got your entertainment, and you know what’s on the menu. So, what’s missing? A Christmas candle is the icing on the cake.

Filling the room with both a glorious, festive scent and a soft, flickering light will really set the mood for those winter evenings snuggled up with a book or watching your favourite Christmas movies.

What’s even better? If you’ve made that candle yourself!

Why DIY?

While grabbing a Christmas candle at a shop or a festive market is all well and good, there’s nothing quite as rewarding as enjoying the scent of a candle that you’ve made with your own fair hands.

Plus, DIY means that you’ve got the peace of mind of knowing exactly what’s in your candles so that you’re sure you’re not breathing in anything unpleasant.

On top of that, good quality, chemical-free shop-bought candles are usually extremely expensive, so making your own can be a massive saving, meaning you’ve got more money in the bank for other seasonal treats and merriment.

Lastly, while we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to keep these candles all to yourself, homemade candles make an incredibly thoughtful Christmas present.

The important people in your life will really appreciate the time, effort and love you’ve put into making their gift, and you’ll be able to tick a few people off your present list without having to take out a second mortgage.

Ready to get started? Here’s one of our favourite Christmas candle recipes:

Cinnamon, Orange and Clove Candle

Ingredients

Tip: If you’re using different containers or want to make extra candles, make sure you’ve got the right amount of soy flakes by pouring them into your container and then doubling that quantity. This is because soy flakes will melt down to roughly half their volume.

Instructions

  1. Glue your wicks to the centre of the bottom of your jars (glue dots are great for this) and straighten them so they stand tall.
  2. Melt the wax in a glass bowl sat above a pan of boiling water (see this video guide). Once melted, remove the bowl from the bain marie (careful – it’ll be hot!) and leave it to cool a little.
  3. While still liquid, add your essential oils. This recipe results in a beautifully light scent, but if you want a really powerful fragrance, add a little extra.
  4. Mix well and carefully pour into the jars. You might need to use pencils or chopsticks or something similar to hold the wicks in place, depending on your container.
  5. Give them 24 hours to set. Light and enjoy, or wrap up and gift to friends!
